A short introduction: Who are you, and what is your professional background?
I am Abbas Abdul, a postdoc in just transition, specialising in sustainability transitions, industrial decarbonisation, energy innovation, and climate policy. I have previously worked at the University of Sussex Business School in the UK, where I contributed to deepening the understanding of how technology, innovation, and society interact. For instance, in one study, I explored how social innovation complements technological and societal transitions. My professional background includes thirteen years as a policy officer with the Nigerian Federal Government as well as consultancy for UNDP on renewable energy and power-sector emissions. At the Department of Business Development and Technology, I value the interdisciplinary approach, which enables me to integrate technological, policy, and social perspectives to advance equitable pathways for climate and industrial transformation. Outside of work, I enjoy family life, reading, football, and cultural activities.

What is your area of work?
My research focuses on technological innovation and sustainability transitions in areas such as energy systems, transport, climate change adaptation and resilience, geoengineering, and industrial decarbonisation. I am especially interested in the intersection of technology, policy, and society, exploring how climate and energy innovations can be scaled equitably to advance both planetary health and social justice.

Why did you choose to work at BTECH?
The Department of Business Development and Technology offers an excellent interdisciplinary environment where questions of innovation, policy, and sustainability intersect. Joining BTECH allows me to connect my background in public policy and international research with applied perspectives on business and technology, particularly in advancing just and inclusive approaches to climate and industrial transitions.
