Title: AI Washing and AI Booing: How Hype and Backlash Fuel AI Mistrust

Speaker: Selcen Ozturkcan

Affiliation: Docent of Business Administration, School of Business and Economics, Linnaeus University, Sweden. Network Professor, Sabanci Business School, Sabancı University, Turkey.

Abstract: As artificial intelligence becomes embedded in marketing practice, exaggerated claims about AI capabilities increasingly coexist with public backlash against opaque or unethical AI applications. This talk introduces two emerging phenomena — AI Washing, the overstatement of AI capabilities for strategic signaling, and AI Booing, public resistance triggered by unmet expectations and ethical concerns. I present a conceptual framework explaining how these dynamics form a self-reinforcing cycle of AI mistrust and outline principles for responsible AI adoption centered on transparency, human agency, and stakeholder accountability.
