Audience questions

The first-year presentation provides an opportunity to demonstrate the progress and quality of your PhD project and your ability to communicate your research. First-year presentations are held twice a year, with the timing depending on your enrolment date.

Before the presentation

How to prepare, what to submit and when

Prepare your report

You must prepare a written report of no more than eight pages, providing an update on the progress of your PhD project.

The report should cover:

  • The progress of your research
  • Your choice of theory and research design
  • Data collected or planned
  • Preliminary results, if available

The report should also serve as an updated PhD project description and be included in your PhD plan as part of the second-semester evaluation.

It must address the relevant elements outlined in section 8.2 of the Aarhus BSS rules and regulations for the PhD programme.

If you have a published paper or a paper ready for publication, you are also welcome to submit it.

Submit your report and slides

Your report and presentation slides must be submitted by the following deadlines:

  • Report: At least 10 working days before the presentation.
  • Slides: At least 2 working days before the presentation.

Send both your report and slides to:

  • Sven Kunisch
  • Your supervisors
  • Your appointed opponents

At the presentation

What to expect, who attends and how it works

Presentation format

You have a maximum of 15 minutes to present your PhD project. Please make sure you do not exceed the time limit.

Your presentation is followed by:

  • Opponents: Up to 10 minutes each for questions and comments.
  • Audience: 10 minutes in total for questions and comments.

Your supervisors should not intervene during the presentation or subsequent discussion unless essential supplementary information is required.

Participants and opponents

You will present your project to your supervisors, two appointed opponents and other interested BTECH researchers, including fellow PhD students.

Both supervisors are encouraged to attend, but at least one must be present.

The opponents are normally two relevant members of BTECH's academic staff. If the necessary expertise is not available at BTECH, other AU researchers or external experts may be appointed.

After the presentation

How your progress is evaluated and what happens next

Evaluation

After the presentation, the opponents assess:

  • The progress and quality of your PhD project
  • Your ability to publish and present research
  • Whether you are on track to complete your PhD project on time

Your supervisors retain the main responsibility for assessing whether your dissertation is likely to be submitted on schedule.

If the opponents have concerns about your progress, they will discuss these with your supervisors, who may provide additional information before the final evaluation report is prepared.

Feedback and follow-up

Based on the opponents' notes and assessments, a member of the PhD field committee prepares and finalises the evaluation report before submitting it to the head of Aarhus BSS Graduate School.

You and your supervisors will be informed of the assessment.

If necessary, the PhD field committee may request a supplementary presentation approximately six months later to ensure that important recommendations or suggested improvements have been implemented.
